Updated: Aug 6

Held on April 5th at Julius West Middle School, the 4th annual Youth Climate Summit brought together MCPS students, educators, and community partners for a full day of climate-focused learning and action. Several SCAC councilmembers were involved in helping plan the event, coordinating with MCPS staff and local organizations to shape the day’s programming and outreach.

The summit opened with remarks from Julius West MS Principal Craig Staton and MCPS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor, followed by a keynote address from Montgomery County Climate Change Officer Sarah Kogel-Smucker, titled Making the Global Local: MoCo Climate Action.

Throughout the day, students participated in over 20 different workshops and breakout sessions covering topics like food waste, environmental justice, sustainable infrastructure, and civic advocacy. Exhibitor tables and an Earth Day Expo offered hands-on learning and opportunities for peer connection between sessions.

SCAC councilmembers Brendyn Iliff, Megan Stallard, Walter Sha, and Quinley Borden led a featured workshop alongside Montgomery County officials on climate-smart decision making. Other SCAC members supported event logistics and engaged with attendees throughout the day.

The summit concluded with a Climate Action Planning session and an outdoor tree planting activity. Students left with clear next steps for launching or expanding environmental projects in their own schools—contributing to a broader, student-driven sustainability effort across MCPS.
